Became student-body president? Made first chair?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Great. But your admissions officer can already see your accomplishments elsewhere in your application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Your essay should show us the person behind the achievement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe you were terrified before the championship. Sometimes the most powerful detail is tiny: the sentence you kept rereading, the clock you couldn’t stop checking, the thing you desperately hoped nobody would notice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Show us what actually happened\u2014not what sounds like it belongs in a movie.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Here’s a secret:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The detail that ruins your perfect story might be the best part of your essay.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n You’re writing about perseverance\u2014but the student before you plays your exact piano piece flawlessly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You’re writing about volunteering\u2014but the people you were helping were annoyed that your volunteers were taking up their usual sleeping spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Don’t delete these details because they don’t fit your message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They create real tension<\/strong>.
