Then tell us why it matters.

That balance is what turns a nice story into a revealing personal statement.

1. Start With the Action

Don’t spend your first paragraph explaining what kind of person you are.

Put us in a moment.

Instead of:

“I used to be terrified of public speaking.”

Try:

“My hands trembled, knocking my glass of water off the podium as seventy eyes stared at me.”

Now we’re there with you.

Start at the moment when something is actually happening. Give us the specific details that make the scene real.

Don’t tell us you’re nervous. Show us what nervous looked like.

2. Use Real Details, Not Fancy Language

Good “showing” isn’t about stuffing your essay with dramatic descriptions.

It’s about specific, literal details.

Don’t write:

“The aromatic vapors of freshly prepared cuisine enveloped the room.”

Just write:

“The kitchen smelled like burnt garlic.”

The second version is simpler, but it gives us something real to picture.

Name the dog. Name the book. Mention the exact tool you used. Tell us what was actually on the table.

Simple + specific > dramatic + vague.

3. Then Step Back and Tell Us What It Means

This is where many students stop too early.

They give us a great story, but never explain why we should care.

Showing gives us the scene.

Telling gives us the meaning.

After your opening moment, step back and ask:

So what?

What did you realize?

What were you thinking?

What changed?

What does this reveal about what you value?

For example, fixing an old car isn’t automatically meaningful.

But maybe you discovered that you enjoy solving problems by taking things apart, getting stuck, and trying again.

That’s the part we need to hear.

4. Show Us Your Mind in Action

Your college essay isn’t just about what happened.

It’s about how you responded.

Don’t write:

“I solved the problem and learned to be resourceful.”

Walk us through your thinking:

“First, I replaced the fuse. Nothing happened. Then I checked the wiring. When that failed too, I realized I was looking at the problem backward.”

Now we can see how your mind works.

Admissions officers don’t just need to know what you did. They need to see how you think.

5. Avoid the “Big Truth” Trap

When it’s time to reflect, don’t end with a statement that could appear on a motivational poster.

“I learned that perseverance is important.”

Okay. But whose realization is that?

Instead, give us an insight that belongs specifically to you.

“I’ve learned that I rarely solve problems by working harder. I solve them by changing the question I’m asking.”

That’s much more personal.

Don’t give us a universal truth. Give us your truth.

6. Aim for 1/3 Show, 2/3 Tell

A useful rule of thumb for a college application essay is:

About 1/3 SHOW → About 2/3 TELL

The “Show” gives us the story:

a specific moment

a problem or conflict

concrete details

your actions

The “Tell” gives us the person behind the story:

your thought process

your reactions

what you realized

your values

why the experience matters

The reflection should take up more space because the story is the evidence, but your thinking is the point.

The Formula to Remember

When you’re stuck on your college essay, remember:

SHOW → THINK → TELL

SHOW: Put us in a real moment.

THINK: Let us see your mind working through it.

TELL: Explain what the experience reveals about you.

Your essay doesn’t need to sound profound.

It needs to make the reader think:

“Now I understand this person.”

That’s what good college essay storytelling does.

In our first post, we looked at six common college essay mistakes, including the mistake of faking “show, don’t tell.” But here’s the problem: “Show, don’t tell” is only half the advice.
