Don’t Write the Introduction First

One of the biggest mistakes students make is spending an hour trying to create the perfect opening sentence.

Don’t.

Start with the part of the story you can actually see.

Maybe you know exactly what happened when your science experiment failed.

Maybe you remember the argument with your brother word for word.

Maybe you can picture yourself sitting in your grandmother’s kitchen.

Start there.

You can always come back and write the introduction once you understand where the essay is going.

In fact, your best opening sentence may not occur to you until you’ve written the entire essay.

2. Write the Story Before You Perfect the Meaning

When you’re writing your first draft, separate two jobs:

First: What happened?

Second: What does it mean?

Start by getting the story down.

What did you do?

What happened next?

What went wrong?

What did you notice?

What were you thinking?

Then go back and ask:

Why does this matter?

Maybe the experience changed the way you approach problems.

Maybe you discovered something uncomfortable about yourself.

Maybe your original understanding of the situation was wrong.

Don’t try to express all of that perfectly in the first paragraph.

Get the raw material down first.

3. Write Like You’re Telling One Person

“I’m writing my college essay” is a terrifying thought.

“I’m telling someone a story” is much easier.

Imagine you’re sitting across from someone who genuinely wants to know what happened.

How would you explain it?

You probably wouldn’t say:

“This transformative experience significantly enhanced my appreciation for perseverance.”

You’d probably say:

“I thought I was going to quit.”

That’s much more interesting.

Your first draft should sound like you explaining something you genuinely care about, not like a student trying to sound impressive.

You can polish the language later.

4. Don’t Delete While You’re Drafting

This is one of the simplest ways to make writing easier:

Stop editing while you’re creating.

Don’t:

rewrite every sentence immediately

search for better synonyms

obsess over your opening

count every word

reread the previous paragraph ten times

worry about whether an admissions officer will love it

If you think of a better sentence, write it.

If you realize a paragraph is weak, keep going.

If you aren’t sure whether a detail belongs, leave it for now.

You can always cut something.

You can’t revise a blank page.

5. Give Yourself Permission to Write a Bad First Draft

Your first draft may be bad.

That’s okay.

It may be repetitive.

It may be too long.

The introduction may be terrible.

You may discover halfway through that your original idea isn’t quite right.

That’s not failure.

That’s drafting.

Think of your first draft as raw material rather than a finished product.

You are not trying to produce the final 650 words.

You’re trying to discover what your essay actually wants to say.

The first draft isn’t supposed to impress anyone.

It’s supposed to help you discover the essay you actually want to write.

Once you have that raw material, you can start doing the much harder and more important work:

revising it.

You have your topic.
